You don't need to submit a separate claim for Rent Assistance. The government will automatically check if you're eligible when you apply for certain payments or update your accommodation details.
Steps to Get Rent Assistance:
- Check If You Qualify
If you're making a new claim for a payment: We will assess your eligibility for Rent Assistance as part of your claim. If you have a formal tenancy agreement, you’ll need to provide it. If not, we may send you a Rent Certificate to confirm your rent details.
If you already receive a payment: Update your address and accommodation details online, and we'll check if you qualify. The easiest way to do this is through your myGov account.Steps:
Sign in to myGov and select Centrelink.
Go to MENU > My Details > Personal and contact details.
Update your contact, address, or accommodation details as needed.
You can also update your details via the Express Plus Centrelink app, by phone, or by visiting a service centre.
- Provide Proof of Rent
We may ask for proof of your rent, such as a tenancy agreement or Rent Certificate. You can submit these documents online, by mail, or in person at a service centre. Only submit a Rent Certificate if we specifically request it.
You can also request a Rent Certificate 48 hours after updating your address or when your payment claim is approved.
- Wait for the Results
After submitting your claim or updating your details, you can track its progress via myGov or the Express Plus Centrelink app. We will notify you of the outcome via your myGov Inbox or by mail if you don’t receive electronic letters.
If we need additional information, we’ll contact you. If your Rent Assistance changes, we’ll inform you about any increases or decreases in your payment.
If you disagree with the decision, you can request a review.
